Shrewsbury crash leads to arrest of IOHE


A violent car accident outside a Burger King in Shrewsbury led to the arrest of two Massachusetts men.

Leosol Vargas, 23, of Hopkinton, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and having an open alcohol container after the 2015 Lexus RC350 he was driving collided with a 2017 Chevy Equinox , overturning the SUV. Another man who was a passenger in the Lexus faces weapons charges.

Police arrived at 2:14 a.m. to find the Chevy Equinox overturned in the middle of the intersection of Route 9 and Avenue Quinsigamond. The SUV was on fire.

Firefighters helped the driver out of the SUV, police said. The driver, who has not been named, drove to UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Officers found a damaged 2015 Lexus in the Burger King parking lot. Five occupants, including Vargas, got out of the car before the police arrived, police said. They suffered “superficial injuries,” according to a press release.

Shrewsbury Police said officers found two handguns, a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson and a .380 caliber Glock inside the Lexus. Officers said they found cartridge cases in a nearby parking lot that were of the same caliber as one of the handguns seized.

Vargas was charged with driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, driving under the influence of danger, consuming alcohol in an open container in a motor vehicle and possession of narcotics.

Benjamin Peterson, 22, of West Boylston, has been charged with obstructing justice, two counts of unlawfully storing a firearm and two counts of intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm .

The accident is still under investigation, Shrewsbury police said.
