Vice President Yemi Osinbajo described Nigeria as a nation with sufficient promise and skill.

It is just as he advised citizens to always speak well of the country wherever they are across the world.

According to a statement released by the Vice President’s media assistant, Laolu Akande, on Tuesday, Osinbajo spoke as he welcomed the world-class gymnasts from TIG International Gymnastics Club, Abuja, under coach Anthony Asuquo.

Speaking after the athletes’ remarks and a video presentation of their participation in the recent South African championships, the vice-president praised the behavior of the gymnasts, their coaches and their parents, especially since he was just becoming aware of the abundance of talent in the sport in Nigeria.

According to him, “It is for me very heartwarming, intriguing and exciting because there is really great hope for gymnastics in Nigeria, especially for people who are starting so young.

“I’m very encouraged by what we’re seeing, especially that so many kids are winning medals and doing well in gymnastics.

“I see a lot of categories of athletics and how well people are doing, but I think we really have great potential, and just seeing the video it’s obvious there’s a lot of promise and of talent available here in Nigeria.”

Acknowledging the abundance of talent in the country, Osinbajo noted that “what we see here is what Nigeria is really about. Nigeria is a country filled with incredible talent and there are also incredible opportunities.

While advising coaches, athletes and their parents to be good ambassadors for Nigeria, the Vice President said, “I want to encourage you to always think of your country in a positive light and speak well of your country. because no one will speak well of your country. better than you will.

“There are many countries that are in no way close to Nigeria, but their citizens speak well of their country. So, it is very important, first of all, that you speak well of your country and that you represent it well.

“Wherever you have been, the fact that you are so good and have performed so well and won medals, it is evident that you are patriotic and you are truly Nigerian and you love your country and want your country to succeed.”

He praised the club’s founder for his efforts over the years, noting that areas of possible government support would be explored, particularly to ensure more talent is elevated to national and international prominence.

Earlier in his remarks, TIG International Gymnastics Club founder Asuquo said the club founded 11 years ago, has educated 3,000 athletes, trained several gymnastics coaches and represented the country in international competitions.

He asked for support, particularly in providing training facilities and sponsoring athletes and officials at national and international gymnastics competitions.
