URBANA – A Champaign man found with a gun and ammunition at a motel early Wednesday is being held in the county jail on weapons and drugs charges.
Willie L. Richardson, 27, who listed an address in the 1400 block of West Bradley Avenue, Champaign, was found around 12:40 p.m. by Champaign police at a motel on Rion Drive in northern Champaign. They were looking for the car of a woman who had been found there.
Police arrested Richardson as he left the motel with a fanny pack. In the package, police found a Glock pistol with a laser sight attached, a drum magazine loaded with 50 rounds, a magazine containing 10 rounds and eight packages of cannabis weighing a total of just over 2 ounces.
Richardson was charged with gun violence for allegedly possessing the gun along with having cannabis for sale, illegal use of weapons by a criminal, and possession with intent to deliver cannabis.
Deputy State Attorney Scott Larson told Judge Adam Dill that Richardson had previously been convicted of possession of methamphetamine-making materials, aggravated illegal use of weapons and retail theft in state adult court and that he was on probation as part of a federal criminal conviction.
Dill set Richardson’s bail at $ 500,000 and told him to return to court on August 25 for a probable cause hearing.
If convicted of gun violence, Richardson faces six to 30 years in prison.
