Sotheby’s pays homage to one of the most iconic fashion designers of the 21st century – Karl Lagerfeld.
The auction house manages the sale of more than 1,000 lots from its residences in France and Monaco. Among the auctions, which will be split between sales in Monaco and Paris in December and Cologne in March, are several of his personal belongings.
This collection is emblematic of Karl Lagerfeld’s taste. It gives an idea of his aesthetic choices, his personality, the man he was, and the privacy behind the facade we all know, that of a great designer.
Pierre Mothes, vice-president of Sotheby’s in France
The many famous mittens of the former artistic director of Chanel are among the pieces highlighted as well as his portrait by Takashi Murakami, three Rolls Royces, a Jeff Koons Ball Venus and a selection of Dior, Saint Laurent and other jackets and bags.
The eight-part sale is a true showcase of more than half a century of Lagerfeld’s influence that extends beyond the fashion world. The eclectic array of everything from fashion to furniture, from works of art to cars, offers a glimpse into the private world of the man who was more than just a designer – a collector, a photographer and a couturier.
