Illegal gun possession sends New Iberia man to jail

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana – Acting United States Attorney General Alexander C. Van Hook has announced that Dondrea Joseph, 28, of New Iberia, Louisiana, has been sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell to 37 months in prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release, for firearms.

According to information presented to the court, on April 12, 2017, Joseph was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine. In February 2019, while this felony charge was pending against Joseph, a Breaux Bridge police officer reported that his Glock pistol had been stolen.

On September 29, 2019, Joseph was arrested for speeding on I-49 at Rapides Parish. Joseph did not have a valid driver’s license and the vehicle he was driving was a rental. Officers obtained permission to search the vehicle of Joseph’s girlfriend, who had rented the car, and found a loaded Glock pistol with an extended 33 round magazine and attached Glock switch, which l ‘converted from a semi-automatic to an automatic firearm. This firearm was later determined to be the same one stolen from the police officer in February 2019. At the time of the traffic stop, Joseph knew he was being indicted for a felony punishable by death. imprisonment for more than one year and, therefore, the possession of a firearm or ammunition was prohibited. Joseph was arrested and charged with being given a gun and ammunition by an indicted person.
