The Haines Chamber of Commerce runs a series of free business workshops to support local entrepreneurs. Sessions will be held Fridays at noon via Zoom through April.
Tracy Harmon is the executive director of the Haines Chamber of Commerce. She says the workshops are for Haines residents interested in starting new businesses.
“So it’s five weeks of different training that we just hope to inspire new entrepreneurs. You know, we’re in this land of business opportunity,” Harmon said. “And there are all these opportunities to create, you know, where your passion meets something that you are good at. What if you could put that into a business and make money out of it. We want to give people the tools to be able to do it and make it profitable.
The series of business bootcamps kicked off Friday, March 25 with Startup Basics, led by the Alaska Small Business Development Center.
“They’ve covered your business plan, start-up costs, and tax structure. And so every week we’re going to do them on Zoom, and we’ll make all the resources available for that presentation,” she said.
Harmon says the workshops will be shared on the Chamber’s Facebook page.
Upcoming sessions will focus on strategic planning for business growth (April 1), finance and asset management (April 8), leadership and employee development (April 15) and marketing (April 22) .
Harmon says Haines businesses have faced many challenges during the two-year COVID pandemic, and current businesses may also find the workshops helpful.
“Maybe it’s also time to go back to the drawing board, you know, you’re so busy during cruise season running your business that you don’t really have time to go back,” Harmon said. “And am I really trapped? For example, what is my tax structure? You know, how do I manage my business finances and assets? What do I do with the employees? What about retention? How is my marketing plan? This is a very good time to train and prepare for upcoming operations.
